SheKnows spoke exclusively with Once Upon a Time stars Colin O’Donoghue and Rebecca Mader about romance for Hook in Season 4, plus, how O’Donoghue is quite chivalrous himself.
The news from OUAT gets more exciting the closer we get to the show’s fourth season. Last year saw the residents of Storybrooke going on adventures with Peter Pan in Neverland, then heading back home to find themselves with a new enemy: the Wicked Witch.

We already know that the show will be adding characters from Disney’s Frozen, and O’Donoghue promised “all kinds of hijinks and shenanigans” will ensue. With so many new people being added to the show, fans might wonder how the story will work, but O’Donoghue said viewers “won’t be disappointed with how they interact with the characters from Once Upon a Time.”
O’Donoghue also remarked on what it’s been like to shoot the winter scenes in the middle of summer. “Yeah, it’s a strange one because the weather is nice in Vancouver at the moment,” he revealed. “The weather can get pretty wet and cold here in the winter, [but] it’s strange to see snow and ice in the middle of summer.”
As for Hook, O’Donoghue promised at least one big change to come. “Hook will have a change of costume [that] I can tease about,” he said.
Whoa, hang on one second there. Did he say a costume change? Does this mean our beloved Hook will be losing his pirate garb in exchange for Storybrooke street clothes? It would be sad to see the dashing pirate out of his uniform. Though seeing what kinds of street clothes he’ll be put into is a tantalizing thought. A new scarf perhaps? A long trench coat in place of the black pirate coat? The possibilities are endless.

Another big thing that happened for Hook at the end of Season 3 was the beginning of a romance between him and Emma. Finally, he got her to admit her true feelings for him (because, let’s face it, we all knew they were there) and they shared a kiss that steamed up TV screens everywhere.
Unfortunately, don’t expect things to go off without a hitch for the new couple. “They’re sort of complicated people and they definitely have a thing going on, but they sort of have to figure out how or if they’re going to try and make that work,” O’Donoghue said. “Because, at the end of the day, Hook is a pirate at heart, and Emma has her walls that she has to figure out how to break down, from her past.”
But that doesn’t mean that Hook isn’t trying. “[Hook] wants to make things work with Emma. So his thing [at the beginning of Season 4] is trying to figure that out. He’s working hard and trying to make things work, and they have other adventures that I can’t go into.”
We have to wonder if that could mean Hook’s pirate tendencies are going to get him into trouble with Emma. Could he possibly set his sights on a new lady, perhaps one from the Frozen universe? We would hope not, since he spent so much time pining for Emma and even admitted that he gave up the Jolly Roger for her.

Hook’s not the only one with skills in the chivalry and romance departments. Rebecca Mader (who played Zelena/The Wicked Witch last season) said O’Donoghue was quite chivalrous himself. “Colin was really good about doing a Starbucks run, so when somebody gets me my favorite cup of tea or coffee then I obviously really, really like that person,” Mader said with a laugh.
In fact, there was one time when O’Donoghue was so sweet that he had Mader and the entire makeup department in tears. “Another favorite memory of mine, of him, was [when] the head makeup artist was leaving, which was really sad. The girl that created my green makeup was moving on and as a goodbye present for her, he came into the hair and makeup trailer and sang her a song with his guitar.”
O’Donoghue’s musical prowess came as a surprise to Mader. “I had no idea what a talented guitarist he is and what an amazing singer he is. He sat there and sang a song and by the time he finished, everyone was crying. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen, that was his goodbye gift to her. It was really sweet.”
Here’s hoping Hook takes after his alter ego in the romance department. But if it’s not a lady who gets Hook into trouble, it could be a disagreement of another sort. Will Emma’s walls come back up for some reason, causing her to question their relationship? Or might Hook get himself involved in some sort of naughty pirate business that the former deputy sheriff of Storybrooke won’t approve?
