Taylor Swift is growing up. The singer will release her latest album, 1989, in October, but she has revealed that her fans should expect something completely new.

Swift has gained a reputation for singing about her broken relationships, but it looks like she may be staying away from that territory this time. Swift opened up to Fusion magazine about her new attitude, and said when she released Red in 2012, she “was very enamored by romance.”
“At this point I’m really just like, ‘I wanna be with my friends!'” she explained. “I wanna define my life on my own terms. That’s really my list of priorities now, which is different than it was a few years ago.”
That place that Swift was in is evident on her album, Red, which the singer says “was a devastating record.”
“It was about dealing with an intense heartbreak, and 1989 is about the phase after that where you brush yourself off and you’re OK.”
Swift has not only matured, but she has gotten older. She is now 24 and she said she wanted this album to be a positive one — not so much about boys, but more about friends.
“My life is all about my friends right now, but I don’t have any song that’s like ‘best friends anthem,'” she said. “I really am trying to put these messages across subtly and tell stories where kind of those aspects of my life as felt rather than said to you.”

The first single from 1989 is a girl anthem, called “Shake It Off.” According to Swift, it is “about the girl who’s criticizing someone in the 11th grade because she thinks her hair looks stupid — and then that girl goes and cries in the bathroom because of it.”
Swift said, “These are the things that we go through in every stage of our life.”
Taylor Swift’s new album, 1989, will be out Oct. 27.
