Matthew McConaughey’s latest gig: Car salesman

Matthew McConaughey has taken a new job selling cars. Don’t worry about his acting career, he’s doing just fine. The Oscar-winning actor has signed a multi-year contract to represent Ford’s luxury line of cars, Lincoln.

The ads are scheduled to begin in September running on both TV and the internet. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the commercials were shot in the Austin, Texas area where McConaughey makes his home with wife Camila Alves and their three kids.

The director was Nicolas Winding Refn, who is well known for the artsy indie film Drive, which starred Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan in 2011.

The ads target the current launch of Lincoln’s MKC crossover vehicle. The brand is trying to create a sexier image for their cars after ending a campaign with previous spokesperson John Slattery of Mad Men.

In a statement on Thursday, McConaughey said, “It was clear from the start they appreciated me as an individual first and foremost, and I would be able to be myself in this collaboration. Lincoln is an iconic, American brand and I like where they are heading with their transformation. I had the chance to drive the new MKC around Texas and I think they’re doing a good job.”

Lincoln also noted in the statement that the Texas-based actor starred in the 2011 film The Lincoln Lawyer, about a Los Angeles lawyer who works out of the back of his Lincoln Town Car.

McConaughey isn’t the only A-lister to be promoting cars. Jon Hamm narrates commercials for Mercedes, Michael Pitt stars in Gus Van Sant-directed ads for BMW and Damian Lewis and Shannyn Sossamon are in Ridley Scott’s recent campaign for Jaguar.
