Jon Hamm has a special connection to Ferguson, Missouri, and he hopes that the community can come out stronger after the recent events.

Hamm, who claims Ferguson as his hometown, was chosen to throw the first pitch at the St. Louis Cardinals/Cincinnati Reds game on Monday and he took the opportunity to share his views about the shooting of an unarmed citizen named Michael Brown by a member of the Ferguson police force, as well as his thoughts on the protesting that has transpired since.
“People in St Louis, from my experience, are great people,” he told reporters at the game, via Entertainment Tonight Online. “If anyone can deal with this, we can. I hope everybody pulls together for the sake of the community. Really, that’s all you got, at the end of the day.”

Though Hamm has faith in the people from the place he calls home, he still admits that watching the recent events is hard to take. “I don’t think it’s easy for anybody to watch that play out,” he said. “I mean, we’ve seen it in cities around the world. We’ve seen it in Los Angeles, we’ve seen it in New York, and it’s difficult to watch because it’s my hometown. And the only thing I can really say about it is that I hope people… I hope that cooler heads prevail.”

The Mad Men star also added that he remains optimistic for the area. “You’ve seen the community clean up after the looting and really pitch together,” Hamm said. “And they have a legitimate reason to protest and they’re exercising their right to do that and so hopefully the end will… hopefully people will come through it stronger.”
