Several news outlets have obtained the comedy legend’s death certificate this week, which says he was cremated and his ashes were scattered in the San Francisco Bay on Aug. 12, the day after he died.
People confirms that his family and closest friends had a small, private funeral in San Francisco to mourn Williams’ death at age 63.
The Oscar-winning comedian and actor committed suicide in his home in Tiburon, California, on Aug. 11. He was found by his assistant after hanging himself. He is survived by his wife, Susan Schneider, and his three children from previous marriages, Zac, Cody and Zelda.
In the days following Williams’ death, it was revealed that he suffered from anxiety and depression. He had also struggled with substance abuse for much of his life. Soon before he died, he checked himself into rehab, though his wife said his sobriety was “intact” at the time of his death. Schneider said in a statement last week that Williams had been recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive disorder of the nervous system that often affects coordination and speech.

Though fans weren’t able to attend the iconic actor’s intimate funeral, they’ve been paying tribute in other ways. Fan-made shrines have popped up at some of Williams’ most famous film sites and many actors have publicly shared their memories of Williams — some from working with the star and others just from being inspired by his storied career.
The Disney Channel has aired Aladdin, which starred Williams as the voice of Genie, multiple times since the actor’s death, with a touching tribute added to the end credits dedicating the film to Williams, “who made us laugh.” A public tribute to Williams will take place at this year’s Emmy Awards, which air Monday.
