Miley Cyrus stands by her troubled VMAs date

As details about the troubled past of Jesse Helt emerge, Miley Cyrus stands in unwavering support of her 2014 MTV VMAs date.

After the media exploded on Tuesday with the news that Helt, who accepted the award for Video of the Year on the songstress’ behalf, is a wanted man, Cyrus stood steadfast in her choice to have the homeless youth accompany her to the star-studded event and issued a call to action to end youth homelessness.

In a series of tweets, Cyrus defended Helt’s past, expressed hope that the sensationalism of his story could spark a conversation about homelessness and showed her disappointment in the media for their treatment of Helt. Cyrus doesn’t say whether she knew about Helt’s arrest record before taking him to the VMAs, but she did make it clear that she doesn’t care and, instead, expressed empathy. “People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included,” she tweeted.

News broke today that there is a warrant for Helt’s arrest, which was issued by a judge in Oregon in 2011 for repeatedly violating the terms of his probation. The probation reportedly stems from an incident in which Helt broke into the home of a man who sold him “bad marijuana,” for which Helt spent 30 days in a county jail and was ordered to pay restitution.

Cyrus was visibly emotional during Helt’s speech at the VMAs and the “Wrecking Ball” singer even allegedly paid for a plane ticket for Helt to return to his home state to visit his mother, whom he hadn’t seen in three years.

Cyrus also announced on the red carpet that she is “retiring the twerk.” Looks like we might be witnessing the beginning of a new era of Miley.
