Demi Lovato showed up in a plunging red dress to this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Although the gown received mixed reviews, Lovato was obviously so much more comfortable on the red carpet than in years past.
Demi Lovato after rehab: I still have bad moments >>
The singer posted a photo to Instagram on Wednesday, Aug. 27 to talk about her own body image and how it has changed over the years. The photo showed four of her recent VMAs dresses, as well as how Lovato’s body has changed over the years.
“This picture makes me feel so many mixed emotions,” Lovato captioned the photo. “I remember the day I wore the dress in the very first picture. I remember asking for spanx to flatten my stomach because I use to feel so heavy and ‘fat,’ Now looking at this picture, you can clearly see my hip bones. It makes me sad because I wasted so many years ashamed of my body when I could’ve been living the happy and healthy life I live today.”
Lovato has been outspoken about her past (and present) with mental illness and addiction, but seems to have found her way these days. Lovato has been working as a mentor for those still struggling and she seems to be doing all she can to help others realize their own self worth.
Since attending rehab, Lovato continues to improve and is doing what she can to help others. Back in 2012, she spoke about National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
“Most models are thinner than 98 percent of Americans,” she said at the time, according to the Huffington Post. “Instead of trying to change our bodies, how about we try to change our culture?”

Fortunately looking at the picture of myself in the red dress yesterday, I not only feel so grateful for the love and support I’ve had from fans, friends and family, but… I also feel.. beautiful. I’m so excited to live my life the way I deserve to and to the complete fullest. Thank you guys once again.. I’m so thankful for my Lovatics. I love you… And never forget that staying strong is worth it.”
