Beyoncé can sing, dance, act, design… the list of her talents is lengthy. This week, she tried her hand at poetry as part of a cover feature for CR Fashion Book and, well, we have mixed emotions about it. Hey, she can’t be amazing at everything, right?
Here’s what was running through our brains as we read “Bey the Light” — words by Beyoncé, remixed by Forrest Gander (whatever that means).
Beyoncé’s dad says Solange fight and marriage drama are fake >>
It’s my daughter, she’s my biggest muse.
There’s someone, we all find out soon,
more important than ourselves to lose.

Aw! If that’s not sweet, we just don’t know what is. Mother-daughter bonding is the best.
I feel a deep bond with young children —
all those photos in my dressing room —
especially those you’ve been stricken.

The pictures in the dressing room bit threw us a little, but we’re working through it. Keep talking….
Children I’ve met across the years —
they uplift me like pieces of moon,
And guide me, whispering in my ear.

Dang, girl. That was deep. Not much of that going on here — pretty sure we’ll be dreaming of man-eating Big Macs again tonight.
I’m tuned to spirits, the emotions of others.
And I feel her presence all the time
though I never met my grandmother.

Sorry you miss your grams… we heart you. Do you need a hug? Let’s be spirit BFFs.
Did the Emmys take it too far with Sofia Vergara bit, post-Beyoncé feminist performance? >>
I learned at a very young age,
when I need to tap some extra strength,
to put my persona, Sasha, on stage.

Hell yeah, girl. Sasha Fierce forever!
Though we’re different as blue and red,
I’m not afraid to draw from her
in performance, rifts, even in bed.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wait. Who’s she channeling in bed, Sasha or her dead grandma? Are they one and the same? What the what?
I saw a TV preacher when I was scared,
at four or five, about bad dreams,
who promised he’d say a prayer
if I put my hand to the TV.
That’s the first time I remember prayer,
an electric current humming through me.

Kinda of a weird segue from the mental sex surrogate, but sure. We kind of get where you’re going with this. Yeah, OK… we feel you!
You call me a singer, but I’m called to transform,
to suck up the grief, anxiety, and loss
of those who hear me into my song’s form.

Didn’t realize our fangirlness was such a burden, Queen Bey. Also, apparently we should thank you for the free therapy. So, um, thanks.
I’m a vessel for all that isn’t right,
for break-ups and lies and double-cross.
I sing into that vessel of healing light.

Is it just us, or did this just become incredibly self-indulgent? We’ve never realized while listening to “Partition” that Beyoncé is fighting against the injustices of the world through her poignant lyrics.
Why Britney Spears’ breakup is bad news for women everywhere >>
To let go of pain that people can’t bear.
I don’t do that myself, I call in the light.
I summon God to take me there.

No. Nah. Nopesy. We love you, but we gotta keep it real — you’re not an agent of God. But your music’s real good, though!
Utopias, they don’t interest me.
I always mess things up a bit.
It’s chaos, in part, that helps us see.

Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo. We’ve been waiting our whole life for someone to give chaos the green light. If Beyoncé doesn’t mind the bed not being made every morning, who are we to argue?
But for my daughter I dream a day
when no one roots for others to fail,
when we all mean what we say.

Getting a little choked up now. Just a sec… let us pull ourselves together. OK. Queen Bey is a wise woman.

But also (and mostly), this is how I felt while reading Beyonce‘s poem…
