Sam Smith posted a picture of himself on Instagram flanked by gorgeous songstresses Charli XCX and Katy Perry at the MTV VMAs last weekend. The problem? He cropped out Katy Perry’s date, Riff Raff, and apparently hurt Riff Raff’s feelings in the process.
On the border of the photo, you can see Riff Raff’s knee and bejeweled knuckles, so there’s no denying that Smith did indeed crop him out.

The “Stay With Me” singer captioned the post, “So amazing to see my girl @charli_xcx last night!! Smashing it so hard #STORTFORD,” so it’s obvious that Smith’s fellow Brit Charli XCX was the focus of the picture. It’s possible that the crop occurred purely because Riff Raff didn’t fit.
However, the flamboyant rapper didn’t take kindly to the perceived dis and took to Twitter to express his concern. “THANKS FOR CUTTING ME OUT OF THE PICTURE U CHUBBY LiTTLE F*** FACTORY. P.S. YOUR FACE IS SUPER HUGE @SAMSMITHSWORLD.”
It’s also possible that Smith intentionally cut out Riff Raff for aesthetic reasons. Riff Raff and Perry showed up to the VMAs clothed from head to toe in denim in homage to the styles Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears wore to the 2001 American Music Awards. Perry, who was previously married to comedian Russell Brand, tweeted that the getups were “a result of my love for nostalgia and my tumblr addiction.” She also tweeted that she and Riff Raff were “going for da best worst dressed” award.
No response from Smith yet, but given that Riff Raff looks like a bad mix of Kevin Federline and Vanilla Ice and Sam Smith’s voice sounds like a combination of Fergie and Jesus, we imagine he’s gonna let this one roll off his back.
