Iggy Azalea initially said no to Ariana Grande collab

Sounds like Iggy Azalea almost had a problem with Ariana Grande.

In an interview with GRAMMY.com, the Aussie rapper admits that “Problem,” the hit collab track she made with Grande, almost didn’t happen because Azalea thought Grande was too young.

Azalea also admits that Grande reached out to her, hoping to do a track together for her first album, Yours Truly, but Azalea politely declined.

“She reached out to me for her first album and I didn’t do it even though I thought she was amazing, because I thought she was much younger than what she is,” Azalea says. “When I realized she was so close to my age, I was like, ‘Wait, you’re an adult!'”

In reality, the two are only separated by a three-year gap in age — Azalea is 24 and Grande is 21.

Azalea, who has also teamed up with Rita Ora for a new track, added, “I felt that my music was kind of so risqué and I knew she had a Disney show. I didn’t feel like it was appropriate, but then I actually met her and I found out that she’s a grown-up and I was like ‘Oh, OK!'”

Good thing Azalea figured that out. Not only did we score a great summer jam, but Azalea scored the top two spots on the Billboard charts at the same time, with “Problem” in the No. 2 spot and “Fancy” at No. 1. She was the first artist to hold both spots at once since the Beatles.

In the interview, Azalea also dishes about her musical past — like when her dad taught her how to headbang, which is just adorable — and how her success as a female rapper has surprised her.

“I was very surprised by how massive ‘Fancy’ was just because it’s a rap song,” she says. “It’s really scary to try to have massive expectations for yourself when you’re a female rapper because it’s a really hard lane to be in. It’s difficult, but I love that.”
