The Walking Dead is finally getting out of Georgia with spinoff

It looks like AMC is all too aware of our zombie-like craving for the horror and drama that is The Walking Dead.

The network announced today that they are developing a spinoff series for the wildly popular zombie apocalypse show, which will follow a different group of survivors within the Dead universe. The pilot is scheduled to go into production later this year.

As fans of the show, one note about the spinoff really drew us in: It will take place outside of Georgia. Though the show is heading into its fifth season, we’ve never seen the characters leave their small little bubble or venture much beyond their scope of territory. To finally see life in other locations is an exciting prospect, even if we don’t quite know where they’re taking us yet.

“Almost from the beginning of The Walking Dead, fans have been curious about what is going on in the zombie apocalypse in other parts of the world. In fact, beyond requests for zombie cameos, it’s the question I get asked the most,” AMC president, Charlie Collier, said in a statement.

The show will also be able to venture into new areas of story lines like we haven’t seen before. We’d love to see the show tell us more about the backstory behind the breakout. Maybe this new group of people will be focused on finding a cure.

There’s also the opportunity to have characters who last a little longer than the ones on The Walking Dead. The fact that, literally, no one is safe is one of the points that really drew viewers to the show. It’s entirely unpredictable, but it makes bonding with their stories and journeys a bit difficult. Perhaps this new group of people will be a little more secure in their location. Just not too secure, because, let’s face it, we tune in for the zombie killings most of all.

Either way, as long as the show continues to deliver on its iconic hoards of zombies, we’ll be there to tune in like the mindless beasts we love. More zombies is always a good thing.

Season 5 of The Walking Dead premieres Sunday, Oct. 12 at 9:00 p.m. on AMC.
