Jon Heder, otherwise known as Napoleon Dynamite, is the latest celeb to send a sweet message to special fan that is in some serious need of spirit lifting. Heder joins a growing number of his Hollywood peers who are showing us that they’re willing to go the extra mile, give back and restore our faith in the human race.

Heder caught wind that 12-year-old leukemia patient Mary Elizabeth Paris was keeping herself occupied at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta while waiting for a bone marrow transplant by pretty much watching Napoleon Dynamite on repeat, according to Today via NBC’s Atlanta affiliate. Heder wasted no time jumping back into his breakout role and sent a hilarious personalized message to Paris.
“Hey how’s it going, Mary Elizabeth? I heard that you’re a pretty big fan of mine and that’s pretty cool, I guess,” Napoleon/Heder says in the video. “Uh, I just wanted to say good luck. Hang in there. You’re gonna do awesome. And, uh, just listen to your heart. That’s what, pretty much, all I do… Um, so I heard your nurses decorated your room and made it all gold. That’s pretty much, like, the best color of all time.”
In a day and age where celebs and plebeians alike seem to be involved in constantly bashing others and engaging in social media warfare, it’s so refreshing to see that there are still things happening on a daily basis that show we, as humans, still feel good about lifting each other up.
Heder’s not the only entertainer as of late that has bestowed an act of kindness on someone who needs it. Ed Sheeran fulfilled a teen’s dying wish in April by singing her to sleep, and Charlie Sheen spent buckets of his own money flying a terminally ill fan and his family to California so they could all spend the day with Sheen.
Say what you will about Miley Cyrus, but the girl who loves to twerk has a big heart. Just this past year she sent a video message to a young fan who watched it just an hour before passing away, and Cyrus most recently has been trying to raise awareness for America’s homeless youth, even bringing a homeless man as her date to the 2014 MTV VMAs.
And still other celebs, like Jennifer Hudson and Jaime King, dedicate tons of their own personal time giving back to charities that they believe in that help children living in poverty.
Though celebs have been lifting spirits since before the dawn of USO tours, it’s still nice to see that social media can be used for something other than spewing insults and that there is still a plethora of people out there who care about others.
