Neil Patrick Harris‘ How I Met Your Mother character, Barney Stinson, spoke openly about his distrust of marriage, but in real life, the actor seemed much happier to become a husband. However, Harris finally admitted his love for his husband wasn’t his main motivation to be married.

“I think when our kids got to the age when they were having reasonable conversations where they’re asking lots of ‘why’ questions, then it seemed [important] to be able to have a real clear-cut [identity] of who their daddy is — that he’s my husband, it was easier than partner or boyfriend,” he told the ladies of The View on Wednesday, Sept. 17.
Harris and his husband, David Burtka, were married on Sept. 8 after more than 10 years together. Their children, twins Gideon and Harper, were born to a surrogate in 2010 and Harris said they have already seen a change in their parents. He recently told Glamour he and Burtka have been working to keep the spark alive.
“Honeymoon phases end. They just do,” Harris recently explained. “We’re animals, and animals aren’t inclined to copulate with just each other for the rest of their lives. So here’s a challenge: How do you keep redefining your relationship? I think you have to find new elements that turn you on, and not only sexually.”
But their children are what has helped them through the tough spots in their relationship. And according to Us Weekly, Harris said their wedding was exactly what they had hoped it would be.

“It was nice, very small and intimate. Only about 45 people were there,” he explained. “We did it as a destination wedding, and it kept the numbers down. I just wanted to be able to say nice things about David to David in front of the people that mattered the most to us. It was less about a proclamation and more about a declaration that I was able to share in front of our kids.”
