Netflix is about to get some competition from Hulu and its newest series

Hulu has ordered a new original drama series from a couple of Hollywood’s heavy hitters, which could make the network a real competitor for Netflix.

Right now, it’s hard to argue the fact that Netflix is the king of original dramas when it comes to online and streaming sites. With shows like Orange Is the New Black, Hemlock Grove and House of Cards, the online network has been ruling the roost for a while.

But another online streaming site has been adding some impressive dramas to its roster. Hulu already has a couple of strong original series of its own, including East Los High and Line of Duty.

Now Hulu has another drama to add to its list. The network announced today that it has given a direct-to-series order for 11/22/63. The nine-hour event series will be based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and executive producer/writer Bridget Carpenter. If any of those names sound familiar, that’s probably because they’ve both been behind some of the biggest TV shows in the past few years, including Lost, Person of Interest and Under the Dome.

Oh and you also might know Abrams from a couple of little films like the Star Trek remakes and the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII.

Here is a synopsis of the story from Hulu:

11/22/63 is a thriller in which high school English teacher Jake Epping travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. But his mission is threatened by Lee Harvey Oswald, his falling in love and the past itself, which doesn’t want to be changed.

“If I ever wrote a book that cries out for long-form, event-TV programming, 11/22/63 is it. I’m excited that it’s going to happen, and am looking forward to working with J.J. Abrams and the whole Bad Robot team,” author King said of the announcement.

For his part, Abrams said, “I’ve been a fan of Stephen King since I was in junior high school. The chance to work with him at all, let alone on a story so compelling, emotional and imaginative, is a dream. We are thrilled to be working with Hulu on this very special project.”

Every bit of news about this series makes it sound more exciting than the last. When you add together names like Abrams and King, a story that includes time travel and the JFK assassination and the fact that it will be presented in a format that viewers can binge-watch to their hearts’ content, you’ve got a formula for a hit.

No word on a release date yet for 11/22/63, but we’ll be waiting with big bowls of popcorn for the announcement.
