Though Amazon has had its production unit since 2010, it hasn’t been able to keep up with the online television king, Netflix. Until now.

Amazon is poised this year to take the top spot with a host of original content already getting rave reviews. One pilot, in particular, is being hailed as a standout. Transparent, starring six-time Emmy nominee, Jeffrey Tambor, is the story of a senior citizen man, Mort Pfefferman, who is beginning the transition to a woman, Maura.
According to NBC News, Tambor called the role “transformative” for him, as well as his character.
The topic of the show couldn’t be more prevalent as gender equality is among the top — if not the top — social issue of our time. Pair that with a host of LGBT characters (like Sophia in Orange Is the New Black and Emily in Pretty Little Liars) triumphing in the media, and Tambor’s character in Transparent is exactly the piece we’ve been missing.

“I want to make sure I do it right for the community,” Tambor told NBC News. “[Creator] Jill [Soloway] said at our opening table read that this is about [people feeling safe] to be able to make courageous decisions in their lives and be accepted. It’s about connectedness. We’re responsible for one another. What we’re doing seems to be throwing light on a subject that needs light and love and warmth and understanding.”
Transparent isn’t the only new show with promise Amazon has on the table this fall. The website also debuted Hand of God, starring Ron Perlman and Dana Delany, and The Cosmopolitans, starring Chloë Sevigny and Adam Brody, among others.
What to watch on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon: The Bridge
Tambor pointed out that actors want to go where there’s content and roles and, right now, that’s with projects like Transparent.
Director Roy Price put it best: “Watching television is becoming more novelistic.” With streaming options and the so-called “binge-watching” generation upon us, viewers are gaining access to stories in a different format than ever before. As the media world adjusts to the changes, it looks like this fall season is going to see the best content yet.
