Reese Witherspoon has continuously reinvented herself in Hollywood, but she has found herself being typecast as one of her most well-known roles: Elle Woods from Legally Blonde.

But Witherspoon is working hard to prove she is more than a ditzy blonde in Hollywood and says she never knows how to react when filmmakers won’t see beyond that.
“When people underestimate me, it’s actually a comfortable place for me,” Witherspoon said. “‘Oh, that’s what you think I am; well, no, I’m not.’ I’m a complex human being. I have many different shades.”
Those different shades include running her own production company, Pacific Standards, and making her own roles when she doesn’t see any out there that she believes in. The company is currently working on a comedy with Sofia Vergara and was a part of Witherspoon’s next movie, Wild. The film is based on the book, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, about a woman who loses her mom, so goes on a drug and sex binge.
“I think people don’t know what to expect yet,” Witherspoon told the Los Angeles Times about the film’s graphic sex scene. “When you have that flash montage, it’s really quick, but it’s, like, ‘Oh, wait, this isn’t a white girl problems movie.'”

Although Witherspoon said there were no studios that wanted to produce the film because of the subject matter, Witherspoon herself found that she had very little in common with the character. She admitted she had to ask advice from the author of the book about how to shoot heroin and even hired a hypnotist to deal with the anxiety over the sex scenes.
“I just didn’t want to hear, ‘Oh, we don’t want to see Reese have sex. Oh, can we not have any profanity?'” she told Vogue. “I wanted it to be truthful, I wanted it to be raw, I wanted it to be real.”
Wild will be out on Dec. 5.
