Taylor Swift is an icon for women and girls in many ways, but she admits that she has her own women she looks up to. Swift is in awe of Emma Watson for a recent speech she gave to the United Nations.

“I wish when I was 12 years old I would’ve been able to watch a video of my favorite actress explaining in such an intellectual, beautiful, poignant way the definition of feminism, because I would’ve understood it, and then earlier on in my life I would have proudly claimed that I was a feminist because I would have understood what the word means,” Swift told French-Canadian talk show, Tout le monde en parle, according to the Huffington Post.
Swift continued by explaining how the word feminism has changed over the years and she thinks the meaning has changed. She said, “So many girls out there say, ‘I’m not a feminist’ because they think it means something angry or disgruntled or complaining or they picture, like, rioting and picketing. It is not that at all. It just simply means that you believe that women and men should have equal rights and opportunities. To say that you’re not a feminist means that you think men should have more rights and opportunities than women. I just think that a lot of girls don’t know the definition and the fact that Emma got up and explained it I think is an incredible thing and I’m happy to live in a world where that happened.”
Watson appeared before the United Nations earlier this month to talk about gender equality across the world, explaining that feminism has become associated with being “too strong, too aggressive, anti-men, unattractive.”

The speech obviously meant a lot to Taylor Swift, who also said Lena Dunham has helped her understand gender equality a lot better, as well.
“Becoming friends with Lena — without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for — has made me realize that I’ve been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so,” she explained.
