5 Reasons why you should be watching The Voice

With reality shows on every network 24/7, it’s hard to find the time to even decipher what quality television is anymore. The Bachelor is still dishing up cat fights and skanky hot tub scenes.

t

tSurvivor is still surviving, with or without flints to build a fire. And the Amazing Race is still trekking across the globe while racking up the Emmys. But this season, one clear standout is NBC’s The Voice.

t When this show first debuted seven years ago, it appeared to be a knockoff of the fan favorite American Idol. But a few minutes in, one can’t help but love the banter between judges Blake Shelton and Adam Levine. The show rotates in a plethora of guest judges each season, and in the past, I’ve been underwhelmed. Christina Aguilera both pre- and post-weight loss, CeeLo Green who was just creepy, Shakira who was spicy and bland at the same time, and Usher who always weirdly sat with his leg up and elbow resting on his knee. Was he trying to look nonchalant? I never got it.

t But this season, Gwen Stefani and Pharrell are stealing the show, and all the good contestants along with it. If you haven’t tuned in to the blind auditions yet, here are five reasons why you should start now:

1. Adam Levine is awesome

t Married or not, the front man for Maroon 5 is still hot, and just plain fun to watch and listen to. He’s got a charisma about him that is totally playful and enigmatic, plus he’s really tough on Blake. I’m a sucker for a smart ass.

2. Gwen Stefani is charming

t And hot. Yeah I said it. She is so incredibly beautiful, and stylish and everything she says is super constructive. Plus she can hold her own with the boys, which is tres chic. I love her poise and confidence, and she proves to be an incredible role model for young women. And perfect eye candy for the male viewers.

3. Pharrell will inspire you

t In every show, he says something that leaves me feeling motivated and strangely feeling like I’m on my path to enlightenment. Like he’s channeling Eckhart Tolle or Gandhi or something. I just thought he was happy all the time and wore quirky hats, but now I desperately want him to be my life coach.

t He delivered a great gem this week when speaking to Toia Jones: “If you come on his (Adam’s) team, he’s going to lift you. If you come on my team, I’m going to help you lift yourself.”

4. Blake Shelton is the perfect wing man

t Blake totally complements Adam Levine and is the perfect sidekick with his hokey comebacks like “O-M-G you were made for me!” But don’t let his honky-tonk talk fool you… Blake is savvy as a coach and competitor. He’s not a bad performer either.

5. The performances

t Though several of the competitors on The Voice may have had record deals in the past, some of the performers are totally raw and pure. They have an excellent variety of alternative, R&B, country and rock vocalists on the show, and it’s always interesting to hear why a judge turned their chair or didn’t. Another great line from Pharrell was, “your voice is a muscle, it needs to be trained.” Can he train my husband too?

t Even if the contestants don’t make the show, they are sure to have a great time performing, and will likely receive some superior advice in the process. If you aren’t a huge music fan, don’t worry, you will be highly entertained by The Voice. The last of the blind auditions airs Monday, Oct. 6 at 8:00 p.m. on NBC. And I promise, no hot tub scenes.
