Angelina Jolie was close to her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, and she has spoken fondly of her on more than one occasion. She also chose to honor her at her wedding to Brad Pitt in August. While Bertrand is gone from this world, she is certainly not forgotten as evident in Jolie’s recent comments to the French Marie Claire magazine.

Bertrand died in 2007 following a long struggle with ovarian cancer, but her memory lives on with the Maleficent actress, and she has deeply impacted her life.
“She was very soft but could move mountains for her kids,” Jolie revealed to the publication. “That’s something I always admire in women: that mix of softness and strength. She was half Indian, and I remember that as a small girl, she took me to a dinner for Amnesty International.”

It was her mother who made Jolie the humanitarian she is today, and she praised her mother during the interview for her great heart and curious mind.
“She always tried to understand the complexity of the world. She had a great heart which was sensitive to the world’s violence,” Jolie said of her mother.
Jolie herself is an active philanthropist and a strong advocate against the injustices in the world, including poverty and women’s rights. She actively supports charities, including the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, the ONE Campaign, Women in the World Foundation and UNICEF.

When asked whether she believes in life after death, Jolie replied, “I’m not certain … I feel in contact with my mother when I look at my children. I can feel her influence over me then. I see that my way of raising them resembles the way she raised my brother and I. It’s more apparent with my daughters Shiloh and Vivienne. Therefore, yes, my mother is there, present in this influence, all the time.”
