Angelina Jolie was bestowed a major award when Queen Elizabeth presented her with an honorary dame title.
The humanitarian actress was given a private audience with the queen, who honored Jolie with the physical symbol of her bestowed title, which she originally received this past June, People magazine reported. The title she received is the Insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George.

Jolie’s meeting with the queen lasted for about 20 minutes, which mostly consisted of the presentation, but also included a conversation between the two. Once the private meeting was over, Jolie’s husband, Brad Pitt, and their six children were also brought in to the grand 1844 Room at Buckingham Palace so they could all be presented to the queen.
No media was allowed into the event, but a royal source told People that Jolie’s visit was of a “serious nature,” and the overall feeling was that of “a happy family one.”

The title given to Jolie was announced in June and was included on a list of other award recipients issued to honor Her Royal Majesty on her birthday. Jolie’s own award serves to recognize the star’s work in founding the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI), in addition to her contributions to the British foreign policy objective to end sexual violence in conflict.
Since the queen’s audiences are not announced in advance, no one knew Jolie was visiting the palace on Friday. Plus, when honors such as the conferring of a knight or dame are given to recipients that are not British, they usually take place in private.

The Jolie-Pitts have been living in the Maltese islands during the filming of their upcoming By the Sea movie, so the trip to Britain from Gozo took place pretty much unnoticed. It was not made public until news of Jolie’s honor was released after it took place.
