Reese Witherspoon wants you to know she’s not who you think

It has been a year and a half since Reese Witherspoon shocked the world — especially her fans — with an arrest related to a DUI. But the actress seems OK that it happened and she says it was a wake-up call for her, as well.

Witherspoon spoke with the media while promoting her new movie, Wild, in London, and said the world realized she is not exactly the person she portrays on the screen.

“I think it was a moment where people realized that I wasn’t exactly what they thought I was,” Witherspoon told the Hollywood Reporter. “I guess maybe we all like to define people by the way the media presents them, and I think that I showed I have a complexity that people didn’t know about.”

Witherspoon was arrested after her husband was pulled over for drunken driving and she was charged with disorderly conduct. She explained, “It’s part of human nature. I made a mistake. We all make mistakes. The best you can do is say sorry and learn from it and move on.”

Witherspoon admitted she was also drinking at the time and, even though she was not the one behind the wheel, the alcohol may have led to her decisions that night.

“I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said,” she told Us Weekly at the time.

“It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse,” she explained. “I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am.”
