The Game of Thrones Season 5 opener will be something we’ve never before seen on the show.
Or maybe we have seen it, since it will be a flashback.
George R. R. Martin admits some fan predictions are right
Still, it’s definitely something different, and producers are confirming they’re breaking one of their previously staunch rules of the show by bringing us back in time.
According to Entertainment Weekly, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss shared the flashback news during a Q&A with film students. The two said that they’d initially said no prophecies, dreams or flashbacks. They’ve broken two out of the three rules so far, and they’re about to break the last for Season 5.
Now, of course, the news of a flashback is exciting because so many of our beloved characters have died throughout the season. There are so many amazing possibilities for scenes from before the coming winter, but one stands out above the rest.
Queen Elizabeth has no interest in the iron throne
We want to see the Stark family reunited and happy, Ned Stark included.
Remember how, in that first episode, even after Bran got pushed out the window, you could tell the family shares a deep bond? Those initial scenes have carried us through four seasons now because we so quickly and passionately fell in love with one family. Despite their mistakes and misgivings as the story progresses, we still forgive and root for them because Ned Stark was teaching them the greatest integrity, and we want to see those teachings realized.
We think the perfect scene would be an Arya memory. She seems to be the only Stark still fighting to find some semblance of her family, yet she can’t seem to piece them back together. If any of the characters need a dad right now, it’s Arya. We know Ned Stark embraced her sword training, but we’d love to see more of his deep words of wisdom. We miss those days!

Other memories that could be fun:
- Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), Cersei (Lena Headey) and Jaime as children. This one actually seems pretty likely since Charles Dance, who plays Tywin Lannister, said that he would be returning for Season 5 despite his death last season.
- A look at Daenerys’ childhood. She’s practically a kid as it is, but it would be really interesting to see her in her more regal baby years. Plus, it would be awesome to get a look at Aerys Targaryen.
- More information about the White Walkers. Where did they come from? What do they want? We really know nothing about them other than that they love babies and killing people. We’ll take more clues any way we can get them.
