Who’s the real breadwinner in the Obama family?

There’s no such thing as a free lunch, even when you’re President of the United States.

While he was attending the United Nations General Assembly last month, President Barack Obama stepped out for a bite to eat at a New York restaurant with first lady Michelle Obama. When it came time to pay for the meal, something super embarrassing happened.

“I went to a restaurant up in New York when I was, during the U.N. General Assembly, and my credit card was rejected,” Obama said to reporters, recounting the hilarious tale in Washington, D.C. today. Ah, presidents. They’re just like us.

Just imagine being the server in that situation. A declined card is embarrassing for any patron, but how exactly do you break that news to the President?

The timing was great. Obama told the story as he was signing a new order that will lead to tighter debit card security and enhanced federal measures to help victims of identity theft.

Luckily for the President, the first lady was ready to step in and save the day.

“Fortunately, Michelle had hers,” he said.

“I was trying to explain to the waitress, you know, I really think that I’ve been paying my bills,” he said, adding, “Even I’m affected by this.”

It seems the president has indeed been paying his credit card bill, because it was declined for another reason, Obama said.

“It turned out, I guess, I don’t use it enough,” he explained. “So they thought there was some fraud going on.”

Even if that hadn’t been the case, we’re willing to bet the Secret Service would have been OK with picking up the tab, just this once.
