Another Glee star is opening up about her sexuality in a very public way.
Glee and Charice: A teen Botox scandal brewing
This time, it’s Charice Pempengco, who will be featured in an upcoming episode of Oprah to share her story about her own gender identity questions and to address rumors that she’s undergoing a gender transition.
“Basically, my soul is, like, male,” Pempengco tells Oprah Winfrey. “But I’m not going to go through that stage where I change everything — not change my body.”
Pempengco publicly came out last year, saying at the time, “Yes, I am a [lesbian]. I don’t know what’s the problem with that. Because for me, there isn’t a problem with that.” And fans have noticed some definite changes in her appearance since then, sparking the rumors that the YouTube sensation is considering transitional surgery. She’s been sporting a cute faded pixie cut and wearing men’s clothing in her public appearances — a big change from the ultrafeminine, long-haired style she had when she first appeared on Glee, before she came out.
Did Lea Michele get a Glee star fired?
“I’ll cut my hair and wear boy clothes and everything, but that’s all,” she says.
And Pempengco opens up about her past, too — she reveals that even though she was 21 when she came out, she knew she was gay from a very young age.
“I knew when I was 5,” she says. “I was in grade school and I saw this girl and I felt different. I didn’t know what it was, but I just knew. At that time, it felt special, you know? And when I was 10, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s it, I’m gay.’ I found the word.”
The full episode of Oprah: Where Are They Now airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on OWN.
