Alan Cumming’s circle of best friends may surprise you. When The Good Wife actor appeared on Andy Cohen‘s show Watch What Happens Live on Thursday, he explained that one of his dear friends happens to be former White House intern and Bill Clinton’s former mistress, Monica Lewinsky.
A caller wanted to know all about Lewinsky and Cumming’s unlikely friendship, starting with how this friendship even began in the first place.
Hey, Monica Lewinsky: Piers Morgan says you are definitely not blameless
“We met at a party about 16 years ago, at this Marie Claire party. They’d done a thing about her and I’d done an article for [it],” he recalled. “We were at the same table, we went out for dinner and we just stayed friends. And she is really one of the kindest, most loyal, loving, tender, funny girls I’ve ever known. I think she’s really one of my best friends. She’s been at my wedding. She knows my family. She’s lovely.”
Lewinsky has opted to stay out of the public eye for a long time, until earlier this week. She gave an emotional speech at the Forbes Under 30 Summit in Philadelphia on Monday, and the world finally appears to be taking notice of her for something other than her 1988 scandal.

However, Cumming’s never seemed to mind about Lewinsky’s past indiscretions because he met her during the height of the scandal. So, why does the actor think that Lewinsky chose this moment to come back in the public eye?
“I think what’s prompted her to come back into the public eye is that she just realized that her life was so difficult for her to move on from this thing,” Cumming explained on the show.
“To actually try and hide and not be a part, not be in the world, was so difficult and was so kind of frustrating for her, that she was just like, ‘Hey everybody, this is what my life’s like. I’ve learned some great lessons about it and I would like to share them with people.'”
