Feel like you never want to hear another song from the musical Annie again? Hipster songstress Sia covers this old tune and gives it a much-needed update.
Australian singer and songwriter Sia Furler began her musical career with the band Zero 7, who released their first album Simple Things way back in 2001. But it wasn’t until Sia’s song “Breathe Me” made a splash in the HBO series finale of Six Feet Under did she gain a cult following in America.
Confession: I still love Billy Idol, beef jerky skin and all
With her stellar vocal range and hipster style, we think Sia is a terrific choice to help update an old franchise that most of us got sick of as kids. But the brilliant filmmakers seemed to know that if we want to take our own children to see the Annie remake, they had better make it fresh. Well, we think they did just that.
Casting 11-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis as Annie helps put a new spin on the dated musical as well. Wallis garnered much attention when she starred as Hushpuppy in the hit indie drama Beasts of the Southern Wild in 2012, for which she was the youngest person to ever be nominated for an Academy Award.
Christine McVie rejoins Fleetwood Mac: Why did she leave?
A Louisiana native, Wallis’ unusual first name is a combination of her parents’ first names, mom Qulyndreia and dad Venjie, added to the word “zhané”, which is Swahili for “fairy”.
Check out this feel-good video with Wallis and several other young actresses who play orphans in the film as they run around New York City, trying to make people smile. Lemonade, high-fives and poster boards are just some the techniques these cheery “fairies” use to turn people’s frowns upside-down. We bet you’ll be singing the tune for the rest of the day.
