From Stephen Hawking to Star Trek‘s Khan and the iconic Sherlock Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch’s characters are oftentimes highly intelligent, puzzling and downright odd, yet he brings with him such an inscrutable complexity that it’s no wonder he’s developed such a passionate fan base as the self-proclaimed Cumberbitches.
And he’s about to give them something extra-exciting to cheer about.
Cumberbatch is reportedly in negotiations to play the title role in Marvel Studios‘ Doctor Strange, slated for release in 2016. There have been numerous reports of other A-list stars angling for the role, including Joaquin Phoenix, Ryan Gosling, and Tom Hardy, but it looks like Cumberbatch is the one coming out ahead.

Cumberbatch was originally in consideration for the role early on in Marvel’s search, but his super-busy schedule didn’t allow enough room for the film. The Sherlock actor is a good fit for the film about a world-renowned neurosurgeon who becomes a sorcerer responsible for protecting the earth against mystical threats, as Cumberbatch’s skill with highly intellectual characters is one of his defining characteristics. He’s also no stranger to the world of science fiction, having played such prominent roles as Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness as well as Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
