Former Major League Baseball star Jose Canseco was injured in an accidental shooting on Tuesday at his Las Vegas, Nevada, home, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Canseco accidentally shot himself in the hand while cleaning out his handgun, which badly damaged one of the fingers on his left hand.
Canseco’s fiancée, model Leila Knight, told the publication he was cleaning his gun in the kitchen and that he did not know it was loaded at the time. She added that he was in surgery and that doctors were desperately trying to save his finger, although he will never regain the full use of his hand.
“I heard the gun go off and saw his middle finger hanging by a string,” she told the newspaper. “It will either have to be amputated or have full reconstruction surgery.”

According to Knight, Canseco was in poor condition when he arrived at the hospital, and he almost passed out several times while she was calling 911 and wrapping a towel around his hand.
The model also told the New York Daily News how the Las Vegas police had responded to the shooting and that she now intends to remove all guns from their home.
“At first the police asked me if we were in a fight. I said of course we weren’t. We have four guns in the house. We are now going to have zero. I hate guns,” Knight told the publication. “Jose is a little freaked out. He keeps saying, ‘Sorry, sorry.’ But we’re extremely lucky, lucky it wasn’t worse, or that he didn’t shoot me.”
Knight also took to Twitter on Tuesday to update fans on the former slugger’s situation, and again on Wednesday morning.
