The sports world is mourning the unexpected death of former Major League Baseball pitcher Brad Halsey. The 33-year-old left-handed athlete’s death was reported on Tuesday via a tweet by his agent O’Connell Sports.
The cause of death was reported by USA Today and stated that the former MLB player died last Friday after a recreational climbing accident close to his New Braunfels, Texas, home. Those reports have not been confirmed by any family members yet.

Halsey played NCAA ball at the University of Texas. After being drafted by the New York Yankees in 2002 in the eighth round, Halsey played in the major leagues for three years, from 2004–2006. He was a member of the Yankees, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Oakland Athletics teams. According to MLB.com, he appeared in 88 games, starting 40 times with an ERA of 4.84 and 14–19 win-loss career total.

For New York fans, his career was memorable for being the starting pitcher during the game Derek Jeter dove into the stands to catch a foul ball versus the Boston Red Sox in 2004.
Since he left the Majors in 2006, Halsey spent time in independent leagues and Class AA ball with the Yankees. He last played in 2011.
