Lorde has been sent to us from pop music heaven, a rare gift to remind humanity that real vocal talent can exist and be celebrated in a way that is as unique as the artist. Allow us to list the reasons Lorde’s new “Yellow Flicker Beat” video reminds us of why we have a big, crazy crush on Lorde.
The voice
My God, the voice. Lorde‘s voice, as we all know by now, is haunting, enchanting and filled with the spirit of a woman much older than 18 (Lorde turns 18 on Nov. 7). Where does all that heart come from? We were still reeling from the re-release of a 12-year-old Lorde singing “Use Somebody” earlier this week. In case you missed it….

You could listen to that voice all day long, right? Lorde’s lyrics are as thought-provoking as her voice. We submit as evidence the opening lyrics to “Yellow Flicker Beat”:

“My blood is a flood of rubies?” What a refreshing change from lyrics like, “Big, big booty, but you got a big booty,” or pretty much any lyric cherry-picked from Nicki Minaj‘s “Anaconda.”

Lorde’s hair — we want it, and we want it now. That is some serious princess hair, and we really just want her to sit in front of us so we can brush it. Is that weird? Has this crush gone too far?

Let’s be honest — Lorde dances like Elaine from Seinfeld, whose moves were once described as a “full body dry heave” — and we couldn’t love her more for it if we tried. In a landscape of intensely choreographed pop music performances, we love that Lorde isn’t afraid to get her groove on in a most unconventional fashion.
The wardrobe
May the heavens bless Lorde for having the confidence (rarely found in a woman her age) to know that her vocal and musical talent is enough to make her incredibly successful. She knows she doesn’t have to subscribe to today’s format of overly sexualized music videos to gain popularity. Lorde has clothes on, which allows us to focus on what we love most about her — her voice, the lyrics, the awesomely bad dance moves and that amazing head of hair.
