Rose McGowan has angered the entire gay community with her comments about how she thinks they really feel about women. Is her apology going to be enough to recover from her incredibly harsh words?
During a conversation on gay author Brett Easton Ellis’ weekly podcast, McGowan expressed her frustration that while the gay community was all over the boycott of the Beverly Hills Hotel, they actually do nothing (she claims) to help stop the abuse of women in Arab states.
Calling those boycotting the hotel “delusional idiots,” the former Charmed actress said, “Gay men are as misogynistic as straight men, if not more so,” she said. “I have an indictment of the gay community right now, I’m actually really upset with them.
“You wanna talk about the fact that I have heard nobody in the gay community, no gay males, standing up for women on any level?” she said. “There is Sharia law active in Saudi Arabia, there’s a woman who’s about to be stoned — I have not heard [AIDS activist] Cleve Jones discuss her, and nor will he.

“Women, by and large, have very much helped the gay community get to where they are today,” she continued. “And I have seen not a single peep from these people, who supposedly represent lesbians as well… when the Equal Pay Act was shut down by Republicans in the Senate, not a single man mentioned that.
“I see now people who have basically fought for the right to stand on top of a float wearing an orange Speedo and take molly [MDMA]. And I see no help, and I see no paying it forward, and I have a huge problem with that… There are so many things to help and do, and I see no extending of a hand outside of the gay community to another community, and that’s a problem for me.”
Wow.
Obviously, this little rant didn’t sit well with pretty much anyone who realizes that gross generalizations are just that: gross. McGowan has caught a ton of flack about her comments, but her so-called apology on Twitter reads more like sorry not sorry.

“Where does it say that because of a man’s sexual preference, I don’t get to point out a group’s character defects? It’s a human rights issue. Misogyny endangers me as a human. It also endangers the LGBT community. Empathy to women’s international plight isn’t making it better. Education in activism will. Could I have articulated my frustration in a better fashion? Undoubtedly. For that I apologize, but I stand by the overall point.”
