According to The Wrap, who first reported on the news, a source close to the film said Ryan Gosling was initially sought to play the Joker but wasn’t willing to sign a contract for multiple movies (most likely due to scheduling conflicts). When that deal fell through, Warner Bros. set its sights on Leto.
The film is set to be directed by David Ayers. Tom Hardy, Will Smith and Margot Robbie are also rumored to be in negations for starring roles in the film. Jesse Eisenberg is expected to reprise his role as Lex Luthor, also according to The Wrap, though the outlet made sure to add that no casting announcements have been made official at this time.
The iconic character of the Joker most recently won Heath Ledger a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in The Dark Knight. Ledger took on the character not long before his death in 2008.

Suicide Squad is expected to be a different kind of superhero film than we’ve ever seen. It is based on the DC comic of the same name and finds the government granting a group of super villains a second chance if they take on a risky mission.
If Leto does take on the role, it will be his first film since Dallas Buyers Club, which won the actor an Oscar at the beginning of this year. With his band 30 Seconds to Mars and a successful, longstanding movie career under his belt, Leto is known for being picky about the films he joins, though it does look like either way we’ll see the actor on the silver screen again in the very near future.
Jared Leto & Lupita Nyong’o add fuel to romance rumors
The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Leto recently and the actor did say he was already eyeing a specific role for his next project. Though saying he was sworn to keep his mouth shut, Leto did tease that “very shortly there will be something to talk about, that’s for sure.”
Could Suicide Squad be the project he meant?
