Ellen Page will be joining fellow artists, Zachary Quinto, Sam Smith and Samira Wiley from Orange is the New Black, on the cover of Out magazine’s 20th anniversary issue: Out100.

Since coming out less than a year ago, Page has become an inspiration, but it was a moment she wasn’t sure was ever going to happen. The actress revealed she didn’t feel comfortable announcing she was gay in Hollywood.
“No one’s ever been so direct as to say, ‘You’re gay, so we’re gonna hide it.’ But there’s an unspoken thing going on,” she explained, according to E! News. “[People] believe it’s the right thing to do for your career. They don’t realize it’s eroding your soul.”
But Page said she eventually realized who she really was and that she no longer wanted to hide that. She revealed, “It was eventually about me being like, ‘Wait, why am I listening to that?’ At what point did I let those things become important?”

Singer Sam Smith also spoke with the magazine and said coming out helped him realize his own mission: that it was important to inspire others to be comfortable with who they are. He said it has become something of a mission for him, explaining, “My main aim is to tell people how good its been for me so that, hopefully, gay men or parents with gay children can look at my story and think, ‘Wow, that’s how it should be. That’s what we can work towards.'”
