Batman fans need to relax!

Not everyone can agree with you, kids. Apparently Batman fans don’t get that. Several movie critics received death threats from dedicated fans for writing negative reviews for The Dark Knight Rises.

When you think of dangerous jobs, what comes to mind? A miner, a soldier, a firefighter… But thanks to some fanatics, we can add movie reviewer to that list.

Some film reviewers are learning a hard lesson this week: The Dark Knight Rises diehards protect their favourite franchise more ruthlessly than a lioness defending her cubs. Case in point: The critics who have written up negative reviews of Christopher Nolan’s final Batman instalment are receiving a steady current of death threats! That’s right — people are threatening to kill critics who do not like the film.

One reviewer, Marshall Fine, was reportedly the first to openly critique the film, calling it “tedious” and even comparing it to the Transformers movies. His review pulled The Dark Knight Rises‘ score on Rotten Tomatoes (a popular film review website) from its perfect 100. Oh, how insulting to the world!

Some of Rotten Tomatoes’ commenters were less than happy with the negative review, and if this happened in Biblical times, they would’ve already publicly performed a lynching on a decorated scaffold. Luckily, on the internet you can use only your words… One commenter threatened to beat Fine “with a thick rubber hose into a coma,” while another advised him to “die in a fire.” The website was forced to shut down the comments on The Dark Knight Rises reviews until further notice.

And by “further notice,” they must mean until the big-mouth commenters are apprehended and their mouths washed with laundry soap.

To drive the final point home, we will turn to Rotten Tomatoes’ editor-in-chief, Matt Atchity, who issued a statement on the website, urging visitors to calm their nerves:

“Just take a deep breath, step away from the computer, and maybe go for a walk. Have a smoke if you need one. There are plenty of other things to get angry about, like war, famine, poverty and crime. But not movie reviews.”

Pretty straightforward stuff. If you feel frustrated with the critics’ verdicts, go drink some camomile tea, down a tub of ice cream, climb into a Muskoka chair, watch some Degrassi and don’t forget your yoga breathing exercises! Because if you start ranting on the net, you’re only one step away from becoming the weirdo shouting at strangers on the subway. Just sayin’.

If you ever feel yourself losing it after reading a bitter, negative Dark Knight Rises review, just remember: That’s not what Batman would do.

Opinions?
