A lot of controversy surrounds the release of the box office numbers following the Colorado shooting, but The Dark Knight Rises‘ opening weekend total is out.
The official numbers are in, and The Dark Knight Rises has got it goin’ on, with the opening weekend reeling in a tasty $160.9 million. Thus, making it the third best debut ever and the best for a 2-D film.
Although predictions aimed closer to the $200 million mark, the tragic Dark Knight Rises midnight premiere shooting in Aurora, Colorado, on Friday is pointed out as a possible moviegoer deterrent. Warner Bros. withheld the box office numbers longer than usual out of respect for the victims and their families.
The film made $30.6 million from midnight screenings, putting it in second place, right behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which pocketed $43.5 million.
The numbers for The Dark Knight Rises have since been dropping, but hopefully this will not affect the final profit tally. With any luck, the weekends will roll in the dough as usual, and the final Batman instalment will be another success.
