Veronica Mars recap: 10 Things you need to know before you see the movie

If you don’t have time to watch the entire three seasons of Veronica Mars before the crowd-funded movie premieres on March 14, don’t fret! We’ve rounded up the top 10 things from the TV show to keep in mind before you sit down to watch the film. If you haven’t seen the show, just be aware, there are spoilers ahead!

1. Veronica Mars seemed destined to be a private eye

From the very first scene of the show, it was pretty clear Veronica Mars’ life was all about solving mysteries. While most kids were studying for tests or gossiping about boys, she was staking out hotel rooms and tracking down missing persons. In the movie, though, which takes place several years after graduation, she’s given all that up and is pursuing a career as a lawyer. It will be interesting to find out why and to see just how long it takes to pull her back into her old crime-solving ways.

2. Neptune is a city divided

A lot of drama throughout the series relied on the division of wealth in Veronica’s hometown of Neptune, California. The wealthy who lived in the prestigious 90909 zip code were referred to as 09ers and did not make things easy for Veronica and the other, less-well-off students of Neptune High. Even if many years have passed since graduation and the reunion, tensions between the two groups are sure to flare up.

3. Logan Echolls is the definition of brooding bad boy

People say ladies love a bad boy. Is that true? Who knows? But it’s pretty hard to not love Logan Echolls. Sure, he can be a bit of an arrogant jerk from time to time, but you just can’t help but fall for him. We mean, look at him…

4.Veronica wouldn’t be the same without her friends

Although Veronica was always the ringleader of any crime-solving mission, she definitely couldn’t have done it without the help of her friends. From the first episode, Wallace was always willing to be her backup, her confidante, her file-stealer and anything else she required. The only thing Wallace couldn’t assist her with was the digital stuff. That was where super-witty computer whiz Mac helped out. And whenever some extra illegal activity or a hint of muscle was needed, motorcycle-riding bad boy Weevil was ready and willing to pitch in.

5. Veronica was not a big fan of high school, to say the least

For the first two years of high school, Veronica’s dad was the sheriff; she was dating the most popular guy in school, Duncan Kane; and she had an amazing best friend, Lilly Kane. Then, within a short time, Lilly was murdered; Duncan broke up with her; her father was fired and ostracized for believing Lilly’s father committed the crime; her mother abandoned them; and everyone in school turned against her. Not the easiest changes to go through in your teenage years. With the help of friends, romantic interests and her love for detective work, she managed to make the most of her junior and senior years, but she was still more than happy to put high school in the rear-view. Heading back for her high school reunion? Not high on her list of things to do.

6. Logan and Veronica have mad chemistry

If you’re going to remember anything going into the movie, this is it. Their on-again, off-again relationship was certainly turbulent, but that just made it one for the history books. Or as Logan would say, “epic.”

7. Piz is adorable… but perhaps too much so?

After building up the complex, high-voltage chemistry between Veronica and Logan, Stosh Piznarski, a.k.a. Piz, was introduced to shake things up. He was cute, kind, lovable and enthralled by Veronica from the moment he saw her. He was the perfect antidote to the hot-and-cold, always-getting-into-trouble Logan. Theoretically he was just what Veronica needed. In the film it looks like Veronica is currently in a relationship with Piz and living in New York. But when Logan calls for help and is reintroduced into her life, will Piz’s sweetness be enough to hold up against Logan’s magnetism?

8.Keith Mars is the coolest dad in the world

Veronica’s father, Keith Mars, is hilarious, caring and all around the coolest dad ever. Don’t believe us? May we present exhibit A:

9. Sheriff Don Lamb was a thorn in Veronica’s side for years

Veronica faced off against plenty of serious bad guys over the course of three seasons, and unfortunately the law was never in her corner. That was because Sheriff Don Lamb was pretty set on making things as hard as possible for the Mars family. Lamb was killed near the end of the third season, so he won’t be making an appearance in the movie. But that doesn’t mean things will be easy for Veronica! Actor Jerry O’Connell has been brought on to play the new sheriff — Don’s brother, Dan Lamb. It seems like a pretty safe guess that he’ll be following in his brother’s footsteps and making sure things aren’t too easy for her.

10. Veronica Mars is seriously bad-ass

When asked about creating a strong female character for television, show creator Rob Thomas told The Austin Chronicle: “There are other strong female characters — Buffy was a strong young female character, and Jennifer Garner on Alias. But they were all kind of superhero-y. They had powers. Veronica just had a quick wit and the willingness to say sh*t. And I think that’s what people responded to… her ability to be self-possessed and to not back down, to truly not care what other people think. That is the toughest thing to do when you are 15 or 16 years old.” Cheers to that! Thomas managed to create a character that was quick, witty, clever and exceptionally brave in all areas of her life. And now that character is coming back. We can’t wait to see how she handles the challenges that come her way in the upcoming movie. We’re counting down the days until we can sit in the movie theatre and finally see how the story ends. It’s been a long time coming, and now it’s finally almost here!
