If you haven’t been following True Blood since the beginning, it doesn’t mean you can’t join the series for the final season. Here’s what you need to know for season seven.

So this is it, eh? Season seven of HBO’s True Blood officially premiered on Sunday, and we still can’t believe this is the end. Last night’s episode was all kinds of eventful, without actually being eventful, in the sense that we have zero answers still, but it was action packed.
The show is getting an unusual amount of buzz of late — since it’s coming to a swift conclusion this season — which will undoubtedly recruit some new fans to this bloody cause. So what can you do if you don’t have the time to watch the previous six seasons to catch up but still want to watch the last season? You can simply sink your teeth into our handy guide and drink up all the necessary information for proper enjoyment of the series, duh. Here’s what you need to know:
Where is all of this happening?
OK, so True Blood takes place in the fictional small town of Bon Temps in Louisiana. The series is built on the premise of the supernatural, so you’ll be seeing a whole whack of weird creatures running around, like vampires, fairies, werewolves, shape-shifters and whatnot. Now, vampires lived in secret prior to the timeline of the show but were allowed to emerge with the invention of “Tru Blood” — a synthetic blood that allowed them to survive sans human feasting. Seems pretty straightforward, no?

Faces you should know
The main chicka to look out for is Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who is a human-fairy hybrid with telepathic abilities. Sookie has a brother, Jason (Ryan Kwanten), who is kind of a loose cannon and basically a sexual deviant. Then there’s Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a vampire who totters between good and evil. There’s Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård), another vampire and dream hunk. Then there’s a whole bunch of characters you will never really care about or remember, like Andy (Chris Bauer), Tara (Rutina Wesley), Sam (Sam Trammell), Alcide (Joe Manganiello)… Well, maybe you’ll remember Alcide. He’s portrayed by Manganiello, for Pete’s sake.
The nakedness factor
There’s a lot of nakedness. A lot. Never watch this with your children present. Everyone has sex with everyone on True Blood, which means you get to see everybody’s junk. All. The. Time. Which works out well at times, because you can totally catch Skarsgård in the nude in season six. Mamma mia!
Terms you should memorize
Let’s be honest: True Blood can sometimes get a bit too complicated. To watch the last season of the series, you really don’t need to know everything. There are all these supernatural creatures, but you can figure them out as you go. You should know the term V-juice — vampire blood, which heals humans and can give them a “high.” Some humans are addicted to the stuff. Then there’s also the Vampire Authority you should know about, which is exactly what it sounds like (think Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter). You should also know about hepatitis V (or hep-V), a strain of hepatitis D that is fatal to vampires. Hep-V is a real issue at the end of season six, as infected vampires are going cray-cray infecting everybody else.

What you need to know for season seven
So, to bring you up to speed for season seven, all these awesome vampires were locked up in a Vamp Camp and being coaxed into unknowingly drinking hep-V-tainted Tru Blood, which would then obviously kill them. But then Bill sipped some of Marlow’s blood (who was this ancient, super-powerful vampire), which made him immune to sunlight. He shared the blood with the vampires at the camp (including gorgeous Eric), which also made them able to walk in the sunlight. But then Marlow died, and the effects of his blood began to wear off while Eric is sitting on some mountain in Sweden, naked out in the sunlight. He catches fire, and we don’t really know if he dies. Hep-V-infected vampires are still running around like maniacs, and that’s pretty much it. That’s where the final season kicks off.
Since True Blood season seven premiered on Sunday, not much has happened yet. All we know is that Eric is allegedly alive and Bon Temps is still the most dangerous place to live in. Will you be jumping in to watch the final season of the show, or are you a long-time fan?
