The actress is nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category for her role as Sophia Burset in Orange Is the New Black. Now, here’s the cool part: Cox is the very first openly transgender person to be nominated in an acting category. In history. Ever. She’s the very first!
Are you clapping yet or what?
“I absolutely dreamed about this,” she said. “I dreamed big and wild my whole life. And getting an Emmy nomination is one of the dreams. But I honestly can’t believe it. It’s really happening,” Cox told E! News.
“I’m a black trans woman from Mobile, Alabama with a working-class background, raised by a single mother and I’m nominated for an Emmy! Wow!”

Cox is a very outspoken advocate for the LGBTQ community and often speaks about the prejudice as well as violence against transgender individuals, which rarely receive proper media coverage. While we do secretly hope that she receives the Emmy (Cox is fantastic in OITNB!), we also hope that this nomination will inspire many other aspiring transgender actors and actresses to never limit their dreams. You can truly do anything if you set your mind to it.
We’re so excited about this and congrats to Laverne for her remarkable work on Orange Is the New Black! What do you think?
