Today is Harry Potter‘s 34th birthday, and we could not be happier. We love this character to bits, and we will even tell you why he owns the key to our hearts.

We hope you have your cake ready, because Harry Potter — or The Boy Who Lived — turns 34 years old today. Pretty weird to think of the character as a fully grown man, no?

8 Things we learned about our favourite characters from J.K. Rowling’s new Harry Potter story >>

It seems like it was only yesterday that we were introduced to an orphaned boy with a lightning bolt-shaped scar, whose parents were viciously murdered by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, and who would go on to become The Chosen One. But in truth, the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, came out back in 1997.

Since then, the book series was successfully turned into a movie franchise starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter, of course), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), and managed to become some of the best selling novels of all time. Not too bad, J.K. Rowling, not too bad at all.

So here are just a few of the reasons we adore this character (while secretly loathing the Dursleys) and why we will never stop obsessing over him or trying to force Rowling to pen an eighth book. Harry Potter forever, huzzah!

For the purists: Yes, some of those are inspired by the films, but the characters remain the same. So cool it. Personally, we think there should be an “International Harry Potter Day,” with parades and festivities, but that might be just us.
