Joseph Gordon-Levitt is really making us proud. The actor once again proudly stated that he is a feminist, and his definition of the term brings a tear to our eye.

What is going on in this world? Ring the bells that still can ring, for feminism seems to no longer be a “thing.”
We might slightly — or rather, obsessively — be pining after Joseph Gordon-Levitt right now for unapologetically standing up for feminism while others in Hollywood are jumping ship. The 33-year-old actor called himself a feminist during his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in January, and reiterated his sturdy stance once more in a recent interview with The Daily Beast.

Some stars, like Kelly Clarkson and even Katy Perry, have recently distanced themselves from feminism, probably because of its popular misconstruction as a term describing a man-hating woman. While by definition “feminism” stands for a belief advocating equal rights for women and men, nowadays it is more widely associated with a bra-burning, unkempt, angry Betty calling for the demise of all males. So it’s rather refreshing to see a Hollywood heavyweight like Joseph Gordon-Levitt discuss feminism with complete mental sobriety.

“What [feminism] means to me is that you don’t let your gender define who you are — you can be who you want to be, whether you’re a man, a woman, a boy, a girl, whatever. However you want to define yourself, you can do that and should be able to do that, and no category ever really describes a person, because every person is unique,” the actor explained to the The Daily Beast.
“If you look at history, women are an oppressed category of people. There’s a long, long history of women suffering abuse, injustice, and not having the same opportunities as men, and I think that’s been very detrimental to the human race as a whole. I’m a believer that if everyone has a fair chance to be what they want to be and do what they want to do, it’s better for everyone. It benefits society as a whole.”

Well, there is really only one appropriate reaction to the statements above, and we believe Ms. Emma Watson can help out here…

It’s rather upsetting that this man is more likely to retain his stance on equal rights and avoid shunning the word “feminism” than his female counterparts are. We have gained so much respect for Gordon-Levitt, and hope he will stand as an example of how feminism should be viewed. It’s not a dirty word, and we shouldn’t treat it as such.
