Join Miley Cyrus in helping homeless youth

Miley Cyrus did a good thing during the MTV Video Music Awards, and we’re proud of her. The singer drew our attention to the widespread homelessness in North America and reminded us to get involved.

We’re used to seeing the MTV Video Music Awards filled with loads of singing, dancing and over-the-top antics, but this time around there was a memorable — albeit brief — moment of pure earnestness that made us tear up big time. And it came from a rather unlikely source: Miley Cyrus.

The singer drew major attention to herself at the MTV VMAs ceremony by showing up with a mystery date, whose identity remained unclear until Cyrus allowed the fella to accept the Video of the Year Award for “Wrecking Ball” on her behalf. Jesse turned out to be a 22-year-old homeless youth Miley met through her charity work for myfriendsplace.org — a Los Angeles organization aiding the homeless gain self-sufficiency — who was invited by the songstress to speak about the issue.

“1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving and lost and scared for their lives,” Jesse stated as Miley looked on in tears.

Cyrus has been working with My Friend’s Place for some time, visiting the centre and speaking to the youths in its care. She has recently launched a fundraising campaign on Prizeo to raise money for the service and to encourage her fans to get involved.

We think this a great cause for Cyrus to be involved in and to support using her celebrity status. While we encourage you to donate to the fundraiser, we’d also like to ask you to consider helping out your local shelter as well. Canada also struggles with youth homelessness, and the cause is severely underfunded. Check out Covenant House in Toronto and in Vancouver, Le Refuge des Jeunes in Montreal as well as various other shelters across the country. As usual, donate as generously as you possibly can.

What do you think of Miley’s involvement with the homeless centre?
