5 Movies we’d love to see at a TIFF Jason Reitman Live Read

Will TIFF announce a last-minute, star-studded live reading of a classic film again this year?

The LACMA often hosts live readings of classic films with brilliant new casting, from Mindy Kaling in The Princess Bride to an all-female cast of Glengarry Glen Ross. For the past two years, Jason Reitman has surprised TIFF audiences by bringing imaginative modern casts to read beloved scripts for an enthusiastic audience in Toronto. The Bryan Cranston and Christina Hendricks-led read-through of American Beauty in 2012 was a definite highlight of the festival. The readings are always announced last minute, sometimes with cast members being announced only on the day of the actual performance. So while no details have been released, we are desperately hoping for another Reitman Read this TIFF,  and we have a few film suggestions.

Everyone loves a ’90s teen romp, and this one has just enough insane antics and weird, outdated slang to produce a nostalgic, hilarious live read.

It might seem insane to suggest a Jane Austen period piece for a live reading, but the heart wants what the heart wants. The adaptation written by Emma Thompson and directed by Ang Lee is arguably one of the greatest Austen adaptations ever, and we think Alison Pill would make a killer Elinor.

We would love to see two young, strong actors tackle these meaty roles. While this might be a bit of a downer to watch live, it would basically be a master class in acting. What actors do you think have the chops to step into these iconic roles?

The Family Stone

The large ensemble cast in this movie would make for a truly exciting live read, and the touching family moments would have the entire audience on the brink of happy tears. This movie is severely underrated and deserves another shot, even it’s only one glorious performance.

So Canadian. So funny. We have such a special place in our hearts for this Canadian gem that features Toronto and some of our favourite hilarious young actors. It would be great to see gender reversal, with a strong actress cast to play the titular role, although the actual casting of this movie was so great it’s hard for us to come up with viable alternatives. Maybe the actual cast from the film could just rotate parts. Now that we’d pay to see.
