In a very surprising move, U2 has released a brand new album through Apple, and it’s free. The record is fresh and a great deviation for the iconic band.

On Tuesday, Apple’s live event revealed a whole slew of new products from the company and — strangely enough — the brand new U2 album, Songs of Innocence. Let’s just ignore the unusual release of the first U2 record in five years through a technology brand and focus on the music, shall we?

To begin with, this album is free. Yes, you read that right. It is free. The album is automatically downloaded into the iTunes library of the service’s users, so you might already have it in your possession. That’s pretty neat and simultaneously a sneaky violation of privacy, right? We love it.

U2 is one of those bands that continually reinvents itself, which is largely why it has been able to stay popular for nearly three decades. For Songs of Innocence, the band went for a crisper, cleaner sound and accessible lyrics. It’s like the old U2 songs we came to adore in the late ’80s, but with a modern twist. The best of both worlds, if you will.

Songs to look out for: “The Miracle (of Joey Ramone),” which is a fun U2-esque tune; “Song for Someone” is the song we all will play this Valentine’s Day; “Raised by Wolves” sounds like nothing U2 has ever done; and “Sleep Like a Baby Tonight” is amazing and reminds us of Duran Duran.
