The Walking Dead spin-off: 12 Things you need to know about it

Want to know everything there is to know about the new companion series for The Walking Dead? We’ve got you covered.

More: More zombies! Walking Dead companion series coming

We’re going to keep on updating this post as more details about the new series are announced, so keep checking back to find out the latest.

1. Its official title is Fear the Walking Dead

This information comes from the creator himself, Robert Kirkman.

2. Its working title was originally Cobalt

We’re liking the official title much better than the working one.

3. It will feature a new group of survivors

TVLine reported information on what will most likely be the six main characters on the show. Considering how often people die in The Walking Dead, it’s probable that more characters will be introduced and some of the original cast lost down the line.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the characters:

Sean Cabrera is described as “a Latino male in his early 40s, Sean is a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life.”

Cody Cabrera is described as “Sean’s whip-smart and rebellious teenage son. Known as the angriest kid in town.”

Nancy Tompkins is described as “a 30-something single mom to two kids, Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there’s an edge to her.”

Nick Tompkins is described as “Nancy’s screwed-up teenage son. He’s too old to stay home, too scared to flee.”

Ashley Tompkins is described as “Nancy’s mostly level-headed teenage daughter. Her ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother’s failures. She loves her mom but it’s time to get out of Dodge.”

Andrea Chapman is described as “a somewhat wilted flower child, 40-something Andrea… has retreated to the outskirts of the city to recover after a horrible marriage.”

4. It will take place outside of Georgia

That’s the first piece of information that is perhaps the most important for fans to know. While the original series has seen the characters traveling pretty close to the Atlanta area, the spin-off will move outside of that area.

5. The first two roles cast were the kids

Deadline first made the announcement that Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam Carey will play the kids of the main characters. Dillane (known for playing young Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) will play the son of the female lead, a guidance counselor. Carey will portray Dillane’s ambitious sister. According to the character info outlined above, this would make their characters Nick and Ashley Tompkins, respectively.

6. Cliff Curtis has been cast in the leading role

The spin-off has found its leading man, according to E! Online. Curtis has been cast in what is being described as the lead role of the series. Though there’s been no confirmation of his character’s name yet, evidence does suggest that he will play Sean Cabrera.

7. It will be located in Los Angeles

After lots of speculation, the location of the spin-off was finally confirmed by TV Line and the show will be set in Los Angeles. No word yet on whether the series will actually film there or if another city will stand in for it. Either way, it is guaranteed to have a different feel from the original series’ Atlanta locale.

8. It will be a prequel

After the location, the time frame of the series has been the detail debated the most among fans. The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that the spin-off will be a prequel that will explore what happened when the zombie apocalypse began. What makes this news really exciting is the fact that this is a time frame that hasn’t really been explored in either The Walking Dead original series or the comic books.

9. Kim Dickens has been cast as the female lead

Deadline has reported that Dickens has been tapped to play the leading lady in the series. Her character is a guidance counselor with two children who is in a relationship with the show’s male lead (see fact #5 above). The teens playing her children have also been cast (see fact #4 above), which could mean that the series is growing closer to production.

10. The first trailer is out

AMC has finally released an actual trailer for Fear The Walking Dead and though it is painfully short, it does provide a few hints about the series. In the video, images of a typical Los Angeles day are seen interspersed with a growing cell and a walker stumbling down a tunnel. Over these images a radio broadcast warns that a “strange virus” is happening in five states. From these we can gather that we’re going to see how the virus started and how the world changed from what we know now to what the survivors are facing on The Walking Dead.

11. A 666 Park Avenue cast member is joining

Mercedes Mason, who has previously starred on 666 Park Avenue, was recently announced as a regular cast member. Mason also appeared in Californication and NCIS: LA.

12. Annnnd it’s already been renewed

Stoked for the spin-off? So is everyone else, which is why Fear the Walking Dead has already been picked up for Season 2… despite the fact that no one has even seen the first episode of the first season yet.

How excited are you for the new spin-off of AMC’s The Walking Dead?
