Let the fandom rejoice! Benedict Cumberbatch will play Doctor Strange in Marvel Studios film, Doctor Strange, the company announced Thursday.
The Emmy-winning Sherlock actor has been busy of late, having just recently stared in the biopic “The Imitation Game” about Alan Turing, the heartbreaking story of the WWII Nazi Enigma Code breaker who was chemically castrated by his country after being prosecuted for being homosexual.
(Seriously, you should see this one.)
Doctor Strange is the story of a Stephen Strange, one of the most powerful sorcerers in existence, is a neurosurgeon who can no longer perform operations due to nerve damage he suffered to his hand in an accident. He can now only perform surgeries supplemented by magic. Strange becomes Sorcerer Supreme and protects Earth against magical threats with his great powers.
The Doctor Strange movie is part of Marvels ‘Phase 3’, which when announced had everyone geeking out a few months ago, and includes sequels to Captain America, Thor, and Avengers. But Marvel also announced they would be introducing 4 new films with the characters Black Panther, Captain Marvel, the Inhumans, and of course Doctor Strange.
Cumberbatch joins the Marvel movie world’s litany of hunky heros. He now stands (hopefully spandex-clad) next to Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth just to name a few other swoon-worthy superhero we could look at all day.
Kevin Feige, Marvel Studio president says, “Doctor Stephen Strange [is] a bit of an arrogant fellow.” and telling his story, “requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity.” He goes on to say, “Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”
After the devastating news that Benedict Cumberbatch was off the market and the fact that we are still pining for the return of Sherlock we can now satiate our little minds with the thoughts of Benedict as a superhero. Thank you Marvel Studios.
