Yahoo’s top 10 searches of 2014: Celebs who did and didn’t make the cut

Yahoo has just released its top 10 searches of 2014. We have to say, it held a few surprises, primarily because of where certain celebrities ranked and which celebs didn’t rank at all.

Not surprisingly, Ebola ranked as Yahoo’s No. 1 search. When Ebola reared its ugly head in the U.S. and other countries, people understandably FAH-reaked out. What’s a bit surprising is that this search term found the No. 1 spot for the entire year, since it was on our radar for a comparatively short period.

Right behind Ebola is Minecraft. Wow, talk about your dramatic shifts in subject matter. “Hey, let’s read about the scariest infectious disease of the decade and then play Minecraft.” Maybe people needed extreme escapism to get their mind off Ebola? Or maybe searchers thought if Ebola was apocalyptic, they may as well do what they want when they want.

A celebrity doesn’t even hit the list until we get to the No. 3 spot, where Ariana Grande makes an appearance. Huh? Does that surprise you a little? She had a great year and everything, but when you think of the top 10 searches for the whole year, would you have guessed Grande would hit the third spot? In this day and age of pop culture, where people are sometimes infamous instead of famous, we have to move away from the assumption that people searched for Grande because of her music alone. She spent much of the year making headlines for Mariah Carey comparisons, diva antics and being dissed by Bette Midler.

We were still trying to wrap our heads around Grande’s No. 3 position when we learned that Kaley Cuoco of The Big Bang Theory landed the No. 5 position. (Jennifer Lawrence hit No. 4, and the only surprising thing there is that Lawrence didn’t hit the No. 1 spot with the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1, her hacked naked pics seen ’round the world, her priceless quotes given in various interviews and her short fling with Chris Martin.) But back to Kaley Cuoco — how is she No. 5 material? How does she even hit the top 10 list? She’s cute, she’s funny, she got married and chopped all her hair off, but how is that top-10-searches-of-2014-worthy?

Here’s where things get really shocking. Ms. “Break the Internet,” Kim Kardashian, doesn’t even make the list until No. 6 (behind Grande and Cuoco?), Frozen hits the No. 7 spot (can we please “Let it Go” already?) and Miley Cyrus barely makes the list at No. 8! iPhone 6 lands the No. 9 spot, and Jennifer Aniston rounds out the list at No. 10.

It’s hard to think of Aniston without thinking of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, both of whom made movies and got married this year. Aniston isn’t even hitched yet. Thinking of Pitt makes us think of Clooney, who also — after decades of proud bachelorhood — finally took the wedding plunge. None of these A-listers, even with their highly anticipated nuptials, got a top 10 nod.

Other notorious celebrities who didn’t get any top-10-searches-of-2014 love are Beyoncé (really? Even after the elevator scuffle, the videos, the baby pictures, the divorce rumors?), Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Kanye West and dozens of other headline-grabbing stars. What do you make of this list? Are you surprised by the results?
