INTERVIEW: How the Cimorelli sisters are changing the music industry (VIDEO)

Let’s start by getting one thing straight: Whether you’re a girl trying to find your voice or a mom looking for a better celebrity influence for your daughter, all the best, most desired traits seem to bubble to the surface when Cimorelli is involved.

The six sisters that make up Cimorelli (and their five brothers) were raised in church and actually started out performing at church functions and small fairs. While they never come off preaching in the music, they offer up tunes that are 100 percent safe and truly inspiring. We asked them what advice they’d give to other young girls and one Cimorelli sister laid some true wisdom down for us.

“I think the most important thing when pursuing anything is to never give up. Especially in music,” Lauren shared. “I mean, Maroon 5 took like eight years before they got a song on the radio… 12 years to get big success. I know it sounds cliché, but if you have unwavering faith in yourself and your abilities and you keep trying no matter what, you can do anything. I promise.”

Seem like good advice? We think so. It’s even more remarkable when you consider that Lauren is only 16 years old. The six sisters’ ages span a decade: Christina is 24, Katherine is 22, Lisa is 21, Amy is 19, Lauren is 16, and Dani is 14. But that massive age difference doesn’t seem to cause too many issues. The girls all agreed that the oldest sister, Christina, is the natural bandleader. Most fights break out when Christina isn’t around, and the rest of the girls struggle over who should be in charge. Sounds like most working relationships to us!

While the sisters work well together, they admit things aren’t always easy when they work with stylists or producers. Staying modest and meaningful is important to all six Cimorellis, and not all outsiders understand.

“There have been many times where stylists show up with several options, and 90 percent of those options are micro mini skirts with super low-cut tops, and they try to convince us that we older girls should be dressing more provocatively,” Christina said. “That’s just not us. Or that we need to write edgier lyrics. We think that lyrics don’t have to be edgy to tell a great story and that great music stands on its own, no matter how the artist is dressed. If other people want to write that way or dress that way, that’s their right, and likewise, if we want to express ourselves differently, that’s our right as artists, too.”

That control over their image is also taken into account in other ways, too. The girls love other family bands and good country music. And every cover they do has to pass the test of whether it’s appropriate. Yes, they’ve covered wild child Miley Cyrus, but they’re quick to defend their choice.

“For us, it’s more about choosing covers based on song rather than artist,” Katherine told us. “There are a lot of artists out there that maybe do things we don’t quite agree with, and if we chose the songs we cover based on whether or not we agreed with the artists’ personal lives, there wouldn’t be much to choose from! ‘Wrecking Ball’ is a beautiful song about losing an important relationship, and it doesn’t contain any inappropriate content, so we were cool with singing it.”

The girls talked more extensively about their struggles to say true to themselves in a video they put together for ICanBeSociety. Check it out.

Want to get to know them a little more? Here’s what else we learned about the girls.

SheKnows: What did you grow up listening to?

Amy: We were very influenced by so many different types of music. Our dad played a lot of classic rock, and our mom played a lot of ’80s pop!

SK: What other family bands do you like?

Amy: We like the Jackson 5 a lot. We also like bands like Echosmith. They’re all siblings!

SK: Who are you jamming to right now?

Amy: We love country, especially Sam Hunt!

SK: What song are you most excited for fans to hear? Who wrote it and what’s it about?

Dani: I am most excited for everyone to hear a song we recently wrote called “Before October’s Gone,” and that song was written by Christina and I. The part I wrote was written in a time where I really liked this boy, and we talked all the time, but he slowly stopped showing interest and it was just a really painful experience for me, so I wrote a whole song about it!

SK: Describe one of your sisters in a couple of words.

Amy: Lauren is quiet, hilarious and wise!
Lisa: Dani is energetic and caring.
Lauren: Amy is bubbly, friendly and always has something to talk about! Ha-ha! She’s the sweetest.
Dani: Christina is a leader and a sassy diva.
Christina: Katherine is bubbly, smiley, motherly.
Katherine: Lisa is a deep, introverted, detail-oriented, classy, princess.
