Fargo just cast a megastar for Season 2 — you’ll never guess who!

Kirsten Dunst is joining the cast of Fargo for Season 2.

It’s a role we totally didn’t see coming for the actress, who’s been keeping a low profile as of late.

Still, the casting news has us thinking that perhaps Dunst is heading back to the spotlight in a role that could completely rebrand the actress à la True Detective and Matthew McConaughey.

According to ComingSoon.net, Dunst will play Peggy Blomquist, a small-town beautician who wants to break free due to some big-city dreams.

Joining Dunst in Season 2 is Jesse Plemons of Friday Night Lights and Breaking Bad fame. Plemons will take on the role of Ed, Peggy’s husband, who wants to support his wife’s dreams even though he doesn’t really get them.

So, yeah, OK, now we’re excited. (Not that the Emmy-winning first season needed much help. But, still, the show delivered.)

We really think Dunst can pull off the feel of the Fargo story line, especially since she’s been busy branding herself in the smaller budget space over the last few years with films like The Two Faces of January and Melancholia.

Like is the trend with many A-list actors, Dunst is turning to TV. Fargo will mark her first major role in a television series since Dunst appeared in a small arc on ER back in the mid-’90s.

The next chapter of Fargo will actually take us back to 1979 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We’ll be introduced to a young Lou Solverson and his family, who have yet to be cast. Solverson’s fellow officer, Ben Schmidt, will also be part of the new season.

Production for Season 2 begins in January. The 10-episode season is scheduled to air in the fall of 2015 on FX.

Do you think Dunst can pull off a heavyweight role on the Emmy-winning series?
