Stephen Colbert will end his show on a low note with this weird final guest

The Colbert Report is a week away from its final show and the just-announced lineup of guests is, well, unexpected.

Comedy Central announced Thursday who would be Stephen Colbert‘s final guests before he departs from his show and takes over CBS‘ Late Show. The final guest list for the conservative comedian’s week of send-off shows includes The Interview star, Seth Rogen, on Monday, Kendrick Lamar on Tuesday, novelist and National Book Award winner, Phil Klay, on Wednesday and Colbert’s “colleague and lifelong friend,” Grimmy, on Thursday, the night of the final show. We have to assume “Grimmy” is a nickname for the Grim Reaper, which is a morbid, but possibly appropriate, way to end The Colbert Report‘s 11-season run. And, we suppose, if anyone can interview death itself and make it funny, it’s probably Stephen Colbert.

In a statement about his final lineup, Colbert said only, “Our last week of shows are going to be really special, just like every other week.”

We hope he means it, because this is the last we’ll be seeing of Colbert for some time. CBS announced Wednesday that David Letterman won’t step down from his position as host of the Late Show until May 20, which leaves a five-month gap between the end of The Colbert Report and the beginning of Colbert’s tenure on CBS. Maybe he’ll spend the break preparing for the massive shoes he’ll have to fill; Letterman will have hosted the Late Show for 22 years and has seen the show through 73 Emmy nominations and nine Emmy wins.

“David Letterman has given to all of us a remarkable legacy of achievement and creative brilliance that will never be forgotten,” CBS Corp. president and CEO, Leslie Moonves, said in Wednesday’s announcement. “It’s going to be tough to say goodbye, but I know we will all cherish the shows leading up to Dave’s final broadcast in May.”

The Colbert Reportwill be replaced by the newly renamed Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore beginning Jan. 19, Entertainment Weekly reports.
