Judy Blume writes about bizarre events from her past in new adult novel

She wrote so many of the books you loved as a kid.

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, Freckle Juice, Fudge-a-Mania, Superfudge. So many more.

And you’ve been waiting since 1998, when she published the best-selling book Summer Sisters, for her to thrill you again as an adult. Yes, yes. Judy Blume has decided to put pen to paper again (or fingers to keyboard, I suppose; I’m not sure what her creative process is after all).

Blume’s new novel, an adult story called In the Unlikely Event, is set to be released in June 2015.

The story will pull from Blume’s own life while growing up in New Jersey. The events are a series of unlikely and devastating plane crashes between the years of 1951 and 1952. The story line will follow three generations of families whose lives were dramatically changed because of these bizarre events.
Blume says the crashes, which took place in Elizabeth, New Jersey, have, “lingered in [her] mind ever since.”

The crashes that rocked the author’s small hometown are described by her as a “crazy time… We were witnessing things that were incomprehensible to us as teenagers. Was it sabotage? An alien invasion? No one knew, and people were understandably terrified.”

During that time, the skies over Elizabeth were described by the then-mayor James Kirk as “an umbrella of death.”
With such an interesting, dramatic and dark backdrop to write from, we are intrigued and excited about Blume’s forthcoming novel.
